Striking Vipers is the first episode of Black Mirror’s 5th series. This was written by series creator Charlie Brooker and directed by Owen Harris. This episode was released on 5th June 2019. the story follows 2 old friends, who are Danny Parker and Karl Houghton, who reconnected over a reality fighting game.
In the game, they started having virtual adult action, which affected Danny’s marriage to Theo. This episode was filmed in Brazil. The idea for this episode came about from a workplace affair in Virtual reality. Critics found that how “ Striking Vipers” explores different themes of sexuality and gender. In this episode, a question arises about whether Karl and Danny are gay or not.
Ending Explained
At the end of the Black Mirror in the episode “Striking Vipers,” on the day of Danny’s Birthday, Theo, his wife, surprises him by inviting Karl for dinner. Danny has not spoken to inviting Karl for many months. Karl told Danny that he had been involved with many characters in the game, but compared to them, his experience with Danny was the greatest one. In Danny’s real life, he agreed to meet Karl.
When there is a real connection, they will try to kiss each other, but Danny and Karl realize that they are not attracted to each other. Karl gets angry when Danny decides that they should stop, and they start to fight till the entry of the police. After that, Theo demands Danny’s truth. But this was not shown, even though the twist in the final was a shocking scene, which implies that he has confessed finally. In the following year, Danny was celebrating his birthday, and he exchanged small boxes with Theo.
Finally, they compromised on that one night in the whole year when Danny plays the game along with Karl. At a bar, Theo was free to put on her wedding ring to make a meet-up with a stranger. At the end of “Striking Vipers,” the main theme is based on Sexual Fluidity, which is uncertain whether Karl and Danny are gay or bisexual. Hence, this episode is uncertain about their sexual identity.
Plot
Danny Parker, who is 27 years old, and Theo, his girlfriend, go to the bar and pretend to be strangers. They have Adult Action when they return to home, at that time Danny loudly plays the fighting game which is fictional called Striking Vitheopers along with his friend Karl Houghton. After 11 years, Danny hosts a barbecue along with Theo at his home. Danny and Theo got married, and they have a 5-year-old child. Danny was not in touch with Karl. Karl is dating a younger woman called Mariella. Karl gave Danny a new version of the game Striking Vipers X at a party.
They both played the game separately in their homes using virtual reality gear. They felt everything real while playing the game. They end up on top of each other when the fighting is over. Karl was playing Roxette, and he kissed Danny, who was like Lance. After a few seconds, Danny started pulling, and they stopped playing the game.
After some weeks, Karl and Danny continued to play the game, and they had a virtual adult action with their characters. Theo noticed that Danny was not interested in having adult action with her, even though they tried to have a baby. On Theo and Danny’s wedding anniversary, Theo asks Danny if he had any affair, but Danny denies that and decides to stop playing the game, Karl.
On the day of Danny’s next birthday, Theo surprised Danny by inviting Karl to dinner. During that time, Karl said to Danny that he wasn’t able to feel the same emotion with other characters compared to Danny in the game. So, that night, they both played the game again, and they had passionate adult action.
After some time, Karl tells Danny that he loves him, and they plan to meet in real life. They both realized that both of them don’t feel the same when they are outside the game. Karl wanted to keep seeing Earth other in the game, but Danny didn’t agree to that, and the argument started between them, and the police entered.
Theo Picked Danny from the police station and they demanded to know the cause of the fight. In the end, Danny admits the truth about playing the game with Karl. They both agreed on July 14, and Danny was playing Vipers X along with Karl when Theo went to the bar without her wedding ring to meet someone else.
