Discover the inspiration and backdrop behind the tale of This Town on BBC One as fiction intertwines with reality against the environment of the 1980s music revolution.
This Town
This Town is a TV show on BBC One. It has six parts. Steven Knight wrote and created the story and Paul Whittington directed it. Kudos and Nebulastar produced it, with help from Universal Music Group’s Mercury Studios. Music for the show is composed by Dan Carey and Kae Tempest. The main cast includes Levi Brown, Jordan Bolger, Ben Rose, and Eve Austin, along with other actors like Michelle Dockery, Geraldine James, David Dawson, and Nicholas Pinnock.
The series first aired on BBC One on March 31, 2024. Knight and producer Nick Angel started working together in November 2020. Along with them, production companies Kudos and Stigma created a project about the UK music scene in the early 1980s. BBC One agreed to make a six-part series based on this idea in April 2022.
Filming began in Birmingham in November 2022, both in the city and at Knight’s Loc. Film and TV Studios. Some scenes were also filmed in Wolverhampton, where they staged a race riot scene. They put out a call for extras to play skinheads in the local news and music publications. In March 2023, filming moved to Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent.
Is This Town Based on a True Story?
No, This Town isn’t based on a true story. The events and characters in the show are completely fiction and not based on real people or events. Even though This Town is not a true story, it replicates real events like the Handsworth riots in 1981. Knight got ideas from his own life in Birmingham and the Midlands during the ’80s. He used this inspiration to create the storyline, focusing on the development of ska and two-tone music.
The story is set in 1981 in Birmingham and Coventry. During that period several changes had happened in Music, politics, and society. The story was started in Riot which originally happened in Handsworth, Birmingham. The director used that riot to meet the four characters who came together. The story’s environment was inspired by the past days of Knight’s life as he was growing up during that period.
This Town Plot
The TV show is about a band forming in the 1980s, inspired by the popularity of ska, reggae, two-tone, and punk music. The songs the characters write are made by record producer and songwriter Dan Carey and poet Kae Tempest. This series follows a big family and four young people who get involved in a lively music scene. It follows how a band comes together despite facing confusion and violence. It depicts that great ideas can come from troubled times.
