Masters Of The Air

Let’s discover what happened in the finale, the things not mentioned in the series that happened in real life, and the true meaning behind its ending.

Masters Of The Air

The mini-series named Masters of the Air was released in 2024 as an American war drama that is streaming on Apple TV+. John Shiban and John Orioff created this series. It is a true story that happened during the war and also it was inspired by the Masters of Air book written by Donald L. Miller in 2007.

During World War 2 in Eastern England, there was a Bomber unit named 100th Bomb Group, A Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress which was a heavy one in the Eighth Air Force. Band of Brothers(2001) and The Pacific ( 2010) are the two prequels before this part and it was made in cooperation with Playton and Amblin Television.

This series consists of 9 episodes. The preproduction for this series started in England in 2021 because of government strict restrictions as there was COVID-19 its shooting has been delayed.

Finale Explained

The web drama Masters of the Air investigates the destiny of the lead characters of the 100th bomb group in the final episode which includes Buck, Bucky, Rosie, and Crosby, and mostly the drama stays close to the real history of the U.S. Army. To escape Buck and Bucky make a plan in the last episode when they step through Germany. Rosenthal thinks about the casualties of the war when Crosby makes sure that the operation of Thrope Abbotts is smooth.

The series goes on, deep into each character in the last episode as the last episode was much longer than its other episode, which allowed them to explore more about each character and the final month of the war. The episode had many intense scenes that were heartbreaking for the audience and also very important to each character’s description.

For instance, When Rosenthal finds out about the concentration camp, at Stalag Luft VI the Germans are defeated, the 100th time time food dropped in Europe all this was an addition to the satisfying ending of the series.

Real Life Events Left Out in The Movie

The Masters of the Air series was very close to the real incident even though some parts are left out without choice. These parts are small to the characters but they are very important to understand about that character like who are they, and what they became afterward.

Harry Crosby.

This series shows Crosby’s education and his career after World War 2 but some events are left out that happened in real life. For instance, it is disclosed that Crosby and his wife were the co-president of their kid’s Parents and teacher association. Not only that they were also active pairs who helped their community in many ways and they were the many Anti-Vietnam War campaign head.

In addition to this when Crosby became the Director of studies for the Pakistan Airforce Academy his military experience was very useful in giving lectures to them.

Alexander Jefferson

In real life Jefferson was a Detroit Public School Teacher, it was not mentioned in the series even though this was a very important phase of his life. Jefferson started his career as a science teacher but in 1969 he became the assistant principal. In all master of the Air didn’t not only mentioned that he spent 30 years as an educator but also didn’t mention the Purple Heart he got in 2004 and he got an Honorary “Key to the City” in 2021 in Detroit.

Richard Macon

Richard also got a Purple Heart award like Jefferson and an Air Medal for the service he rendered at the time of World War 2. But it was not shown that too in the finale of the Masters of the Air. Moreover, the Congressional Medal of Honour was rewarded to the window of the army forces, and the rest of the surviving Tuskegee Airmen in 2007 as an honor for their service in World War 2.

And also Richard should have been the person to be recognized as he was the founding member of Tuskegee Airmnen Inc. and even the president of Detroit.

Robert Rosenthal Aka Rosie

In the Masters of the Air series, all of Rosie’s achievements have been shown even though they have left one minor event. In this series, they have shown that Rosie was shot down in February 1945, and saved by the soviet army but it was not his first time. He was shot down in September 1944 when Germans occupied France which was his first shot down in German territory.

Even though he had the worst injury he recovered from it and was working on the desk for the timing and went up in the air after the recovery.

Gale Cleven Aka Buck

Even though this series shows many of his achievements they have not covered some of them were left out. First worked at the Pentagon for a period after that Webber College was so close to their closing that Cleven took the management into his hands and made the college turn around. And also his doctorate given was in Interplanetary physics. Moreover, he was remarried to Esther Lee Athey and was with her till his death in 2006.

John Egan Aka Bucky

At last, as for Bucky, they showed most of his life events like his achievements after World War 2, when he rendered service while there was a war with Korea, and his relationship with his wife. But they missed out on a few events like  Egan was rewarded with Legion of Merit for his joining in other World War 2 and Korean War medals after his death. He had two daughters with his wife Josephine who lived after him.

Gale Cleven Escape and Bucky Left Out

Cleven escaped from Being a Prisoner of War while World War 2 was ongoing but the timeline of this event is different compared to real life. That is the series showing that Cleven escaped the Pow camp in Nuremberg in April 1945 but in real life, he escaped the camp in January 1945 itself when Stalag Luft III started their shifting from Stalag Luft III to Moosebrug. He was able to escape in between the hectic shifting. According to the American Air Museum record, he is the only escaped from there.

In this series, they showed that when Buck tries to escape Bucky stands in front of the army to make sure that Bucky escapes safely by sacrificing himself even though it is moving and intense. But there is no evidence that he did that in real life rather he and 100 others were kept as prisoners until a POW camp was undertaken by the Americans in the spring of 1945 and set them free that’s when Buck and Bucky reunited.

The Old Jewish Man, Rosie, and Concentration Camp

In the final episode of the Masters of the Air series, there were several happy and impressive moments, even though they were all there were heart-wrenching moments, and showed the real horrifying events that took place during World War 2. One of those scenes is when Rosie is taken to Poland with an escort by the Soviet Army at that time he explores the place to know where he is and finds a concentration camp in a Polish town which is called Zabikowo.

In that place, he sees numerous dead bodies of the Jewish people. Then he finds out that it was all done by the Nazis when she was talking with an old Jewish man. But in reality, the Zabikowo were once a real Polish town which was later converted into a labour camp at the time of World War 2. And also no there is solid evidence that Rosie truly visited the camp.

Even though these were very heartbreaking and hard to watch they are very important for the Masters of the Air series. Most of the time the series was covered with scenes like an American soldier flying for a mission and being brave while they face any issues.

By showing the Concentration camp and the old Jewish man they gave a bigger picture of the European victim’s perspective is also very important. This scene in this drama was bewildering for Rosie to finally see through what he was fighting for and for the viewers, it was the scene to make us remember what had happened and what our ancestors went through for us to have a peaceful life.

Taking Food to Dutch Mission: Operation Chowhound

In episode 9 of Masters of the Air, there was an unforeseen yet the lovely moment takes place. Both the men and all the citizens were impressed by the aid given by the flight that flew past them. On that plane, the members were Buck Cleven, Robert Rosenthal, Harry Crosby, and Ken Lemmons, they dropped food off to the Dutch who were in severe deprivation of food which was heartwarming for the viewers.

This was a real-life event known as Operation Chowhound done by the U.S. Army Air Force it is not a scene created for the movie’s betterment. Operation Chowhound was planned to drop the amount of food needed for the Dutch people who were German-Occupied Netherlands in the final days of World War 2.

The U.S. Army Air Force dropped 4000 tonnes of food alongside 7000 tonnes dropped by the British RAF which was for thei9r Operation Manna. The U.S. Third Air Division leads Operation Chowhoundely the 100th has also been part of this. But anyway, the food was not dropped via parachute as expressed in Episode 9.

Crosby’s Nietzche Quote Meaning

Master of the Air episode 9 has this scene where Harry Crosby talks about the quote written by Friedrich Nietzsche and that became important and also became the reminder for the episode that is remaining. Moreover, Crosby opens up about his fear that killing people in the war made him into a different person even a worse person.

To understand what he is trying to say we need to see the original quote this quote not only tells about Crosby’s fear but also about other characters in the Masters of the Air series “He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby becomes a monster”.

At last, it tries to say whoever ever taking a step into violence for their country’s safety should be careful that they don’t become the one like their enemy. About the war, they say that a soldier has to have some moral ethics but sometimes, they have an act that’s morally not right. Masters of the Air set out an example that is apt for the quote, Buck Cleven was facing a situation to kill a soldier who was a child so he let him go rather than killing him like the Nazi.

Possibility for The Next Sequel

There is a possibility for another part but, as for now, the series will only have the next part for a short time as the time between their sequels is long. The time gap between the first part, Band of Brothers (2001), and The Pacific (2010) is a 9-year gap. And the time gap between The Pacific(2010) and Masters of the Air(2024) is 14 years gap. These three sequels have explored about three different branches of the military there are two more branches to be explored.

After this series Masters of the Air if any sequel comes there are several possibilities that this series can go into. For instance, they can step into the U.S. Navy at the time of World War 2. This part Masters of the AIR was a new grounding to the privilege through adding so much in the Airplane content.

If they do the next series based on the Navy they can do something like their prequel Pacific. They may take some time to collect the true event that happened . but in the end, the important thing is that themes portrayed by the Band of Brothers, The Pacific, and Masters of the Air
